Muslims distribute meat to the needy

Original video By: ssiditsk

The Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, or “big feast,” commemorates the religious story of Abraham’s sacrifice, when God allowed the prophet to kill a ram instead of his son. Muslims who can afford the expense traditionally slaughter a sheep or goat on the morning of the holiday, celebrated this year on Dec. 8 and 9, and set aside at least a third of the meat for the poor. In the United States, grassroots efforts help Muslims fulfill this religious practice. The Islamic Circle of North America in New Jersey teamed up with local mosques and Islamic organizations, including the Why Islam center in Franklin Township, to get the donated meat to those in need. Last week about 80 ICNA volunteers took rented vans to collect the meat from halal butcher shops, distributing it to mosques in underprivileged areas of Newark, Irvington and South Orange.
